Self-Care Sunday’s: My Skincare Routine

My skin is my temple and it is a direct reflection of how well I’m doing mentally. When I’m suffering from anxiety, I have breakouts all over my face that are usually accompanied by acne scars. Depression makes my skin dull and causes it to lose its shine and iridescent glow. However, when I’m happy and thriving, my skin stands out and you can see the glow from a mile away. I look like I’m beaming from the inside out and my cherished epidermis often receives attention from strangers. However, I can’t credit my skin to mental stability alone. I have a skincare routine that is literally on my top 10 list of priorities. I’ve been asked what my skincare routine is many, many times and I think it’s about time I shared it on my blog because I know you guys are going to ask anyway! So, here we go. I’ve been using these products consistently for almost a year now and I am so happy with the results that I will never try anything else.

To wash my face, I use Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads. What I love most about these pads is that one side is un-textured and solely for cleansing and the other side is textured and is used for exfoliating and cleansing. Exfoliating is so, so important. Exfoliating helps shed dead skin from the skin, which results in a brightened, more even skin tone.

Under Eye

I never had to deal with bags until I got my first full-time job two years ago. The struggle was real and I looked like a zombie! I began using Garnier’s Clearly Brighter Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller after a former co-worker asked me if I was okay because I looked tired LOL. Luckily I have not had to deal with bags again because I have used this under eye roller every day since.

For the majority of my life, I believed moisturizer was the enemy because I have oily skin. That couldn’t have been farther from the truth! Moisturizing does not affect my oil production but instead, it protects my skin and keeps it soft. I use Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream after cleansing. In addition to this moisturizer, I add a healthy amount of Rahda Beauty Rosehip oil to my Aveeno moisturizer. Let me tell you something, this oil is the SOLE REASON I don’t have acne scars today. If you are dealing with acne scars, I recommend using this oil directly on the affected area twice a day until the scars fade. I have recently begun using Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Sheer Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 because it has SPF in it (YES black people, we need sunscreen too) and it brings the most beautiful glow to my face. I love it!
I’m trying to find the right words to express my gratitude for this product and I’m actually struggling to do so. If you don’t buy any other product I’ve recommended, buy this one. The Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque is God sent. This mask has exfoliating properties in it and it leaves my skin LITERALLY glowing. I call it an instant face-lift because my skin feels extremely tight immediately after rinsing this mask off. This mask is a permanent addition to my routine.
Extra Tips
1. Be sure to close your pores after washing your face and before applying moisturizer. I usually do this by wetting a cotton pad with cold water and rubbing it all over my face. Your pores are less likely to become clogged with your moisturizer and/or oil if you close them, resulting in less acne.
2. For my body, I exfoliate with Salux Cloths twice a week. They keep my shoulders and chest looking flawless honey!
3. CONSISTENCY. Read that again. None of these products matter if you’re not consistent. You will not achieve your skincare goals if you get lazy. I’m sorry, it wish it wasn’t this way. It doesn’t matter if I come home at 3am sleepy and drunk from the club, I take off my makeup, wash my face, do this routine, and go to bed 30 minutes later.
4. Change/wash your face towels and pillowcases often. I feel like this is a given but I also feel like somebody really needed to read that. No judgment here.
5. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I don’t believe in being a product junkie. My products may or may not work for you, but if you find something that does work, stop experimenting.
6. Water, lots of it.
I’m not a skincare expert nor do I claim to know everything, but I do believe my skin speaks for itself (humble flex). If any of my products do work for you, tag the brand under my post and tell them to cut the check!
